Biggest tip in choosing the best bathroom tile

apartments melbourne

‘Hi Trish – disaster – the tiles are too grey.’ This was a text I received from a client earlier this week. I specified for her bathroom reno, initially my scope didn’t include tile selection. Long story short we had to change the tiles in the shower. So here’s my biggest tip for choosing the best bathroom tile.

Bathroom interior style goal and colour scheme

The scope of this project was small. My client’s primary concern was improving functionality. So the key to achieving this was looking at the vanity, shaving cabinet and some of the hardware.

Hardware such as towel rails, hooks and so on. This led to a conversation about what colour hardware. We also discussed interior style. In reality the interior style goal was part of a conversation relating to the master bedroom.

My client completed my style quiz. Then we chatted about her inspo pics. From this, we tentatively landed on a preference for Japandi style. This needed further clarification but it was enough information for me to choose the specs for the bathroom reno.

Especially as the client was keen on brushed bronze hardware. Of course changing the colour of some of the hardware in a bathroom means changing it all. Including the hinges of the shower.

This was all fine until the tradie advised that we need to change the tiles in the shower to replace the hardware in the shower. Not sure why, it doesn’t matter. Now a small bathroom reno had increased in scope and we had to choose a shower tile.

Tiles samples critical for bathroom renovation

In the bathroom there are three tiles. A feature wall tile in the shower, another wall tile and a floor tile.

So the new shower tile needed to work with the existing colours, shapes and textures of the space. It was urgent. I met my client and we looked at a few tiles online and picked one.

But has mentioned it was too grey. So the biggest tip for a bathroom renovation whether big or small is too always bring the tiles into the space.

The image of the tile we selected on the website looked ideal as did the description. It was described as griege but it was more grey.

Luckily we could return the tiles my client bought and then she picked up a new sample and sent me pics. The new sample was just beige and a better fit. Phew, disaster averted.

I’ve said it before but choosing a tile or any selection for any project isn’t as simple as just choosing a tile. The colour, shape, texture, pattern, material, price all factors in the decision.

By bringing a tile into the space, you get to see it with the light of the space in question. Rather than the light in a showroom or a light used to take a picture for the website.

Light and colour go hand in hand. Even if you need to choose a tile in a hurry, which I don’t recommend, biggest tip in choosing the best bathroom tile is to bring into the space.
