How to choose metallic accent for your kitchen or bathroom renovation

Recently I presented a mood board for a bathroom renovation project using both black and copper metal accents. While some people struggle to pick one metallic accent for their kitchen or bathroom renovation, I was happy to be able to incorporate two. Here’s my advice on how to choose a metallic accent.

Interior style and colour scheme

Every interior designer is different and works according to their own interior design process. But I start all my projects by establishing an interior design strategy.

For me and my client this means understanding and establishing their unique interior style goal and colour scheme.

So for example with the bathroom renovation I’m currently working on the client’s style goal is noted down in the interior design brief as ‘Japanese bathing ethos with rainforest look/feel and an element of whimsy/fun.’

The colour scheme is earthy, deep green, terracotta, black, walnut, copper.

It’s important to establish an interior design strategy because that informs your selections. As some selections, such as a metallic accent, work better with some interior styles and not others.

For example a gold metallic accent works best with Luxe Interior styles.

Most popular metallic accents

To make things easier for yourself consider choosing a metallic accent for your kitchen or bathroom renovation by choosing either silver/chrome, gold/brass or black.

While there are variations of these three basic metallic accent options such a brushed nickel choosing one from three is easier and a good start.

For my bathroom renovation project mentioned above I chose black because black works with Japanese styling. Also, because the client is male and expressed an interest in this colour as a contrast colour when looking at inspo pics.

When I think of Japanese interior style I don’t think of gold or silver, that’s why knowing your interior style goal can help you make a sound selection.

Other metallics to choose from

Of course there are some people who like and are interested in trends. For example in terms of a metallic accent this could be something like rose gold.

So even though you like this metallic accent trend, the question to ask yourself is, does it work with my preferred interior style goal?

Another question to consider with metallic trends is will it quickly date your space. More than any other interior design element, colour dates a space. Just think of the green and blue laminate kitchens found in homes circa late 1990s and early 2000s.

Given there are so many selections and decisions you have to make for your kitchen or bathroom renovation stick to silver, gold or black metallic accent.

And to make this choice ask yourself which one of these metallic accents works best with your chosen interior style goal.

To choose a metallic accent can be one of the easiest selections in your kitchen or bathroom renovation by simply knowing your interior style goal and colour scheme from the outset of your project.
