I have a dog, a black labrador and yes she’s allowed on the sofa and the bed. She’s my fur baby and I spoil her. We have a fabric sofa and cover it in sheets and towels to protect it. But I still have to use a lint roller to remove lots and lots of dog hair. So what’s the best apartment sofa for pet owners?
Fabric apartment sofa versus leather apartment sofa
We’ve had both a leather sofa and then most recently bought a fabric sofa. I thought the leather sofa was good for the dog. It’s more stain resistant. Although I think this depends on the colour. We had a tan sofa.
So for example a couple of times my fur baby vomited on the leather sofa and it was easier to clean. Unlike a fabric sofa the vomit didn’t seep into the fabric. Yuk.
The hair was easier to remove as well, I could just dust the hair off. But needed to vacuum hair out from in between the cushions.
While there are great pet friendly, stain resistant fabrics, I prefer the leather. I had towels and sheets on the leather sofa too but I think the fabric sofa is less stain resistant. For example mud or drool.
Also the dog hair can’t be dusted off on a fabric sofa, you need to use a vacuum or lint roller. The colour of the fabric is also important in a fabric sofa.
We chose a linen colour sofa with texture. While the dog hair on the seats is not so visible there is a dark mark on the external corner where she walks past a lot.
I also think leather is better in terms of scratches versus a fabric sofa, especially when it comes to cats. If leather is outside your budget there are many great value, good quality faux leather sofas.
Giving in to the pet mess in your apartment
So I think pets are a little like children. You have to give in to the mess. It’s impossible to have an immaculate home when you have pets and or children.
We want to be close to our pets and we want them to be comfortable so for most people it’s inevitable that their pet will end up on the sofa.
We’re comfortable having towels and sheets on the sofa for everyday use. Which we remove them when we have guests over.
My fur baby doesn’t sit on the sofa when we have guests, she only sits on the sofa when I’m on it. So you can train your dog when it’s ok for them to use the sofa.
Generally speaking our homes whether an apartment or a house needs to comfortable for everyone. But giving in to pet mess doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable. By choosing the best apartments sofa for pets, you also need to choose the best apartment sofa for you, your space, style and budget.
