How to Style Books on Your Coffee Table

interior designer melbourne

As an interior designer, I create my client’s version of an aspirational space. So one of my favorite—and easiest—ways to inject personality into a room is by styling a coffee table with books my clients have read. It’s often the centerpiece of a living area, and the art of the coffee table book stack is a simple, yet powerful, way to elevate your space. So here’s how to style books on your coffee table.

A well-styled coffee table is a design basic that makes a huge impact. It’s all about intentionality and balance, key principles I apply to every project. So, let’s get into the specifics.

Choose your favourite books

First, select your books. Forget about trends; choose books that reflect your passions. Are you a lover of art, travel, fashion, or photography? Let your interests shine.

The books you display should be large, hardcover volumes—these have the weight and visual presence needed to anchor the display. Think of them as the foundation of your design story.

Place your books in groups of 3

Next, consider the “Rule of Three.” The rule of 3 is more about collections working better in odd numbers than even. I often use this principle for styling to create visual harmony. Stack two or three books of varying sizes on top of each other, from largest to smallest.

This creates a pleasing visual pyramid that is much more dynamic than a single, flat layer. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. You might stack a bold, colourful art book with a smaller, more understated architecture volume. The key is to find a balance between their sizes and colours.

Accessorising the books on your coffee table

Once you have your foundation, it’s time to add the finishing touches—the “accessories.” This is where you can truly have fun. A small, decorative object on top of the book stack can be a great conversation starter.

This could be a unique paperweight, a sculptural object, a small plant, or a scented candle. The accessory doesn’t need to be expensive; what matters is that it has a story. This little detail personalises the stack and keeps it from looking too formal.

Finally, think about the overall composition of your coffee table. The book stack is just one element. You should balance it with other items, like a decorative tray to hold remotes, a vase with fresh flowers, or a small bowl for keys. Grouping these items together creates a curated, put-together look. Remember, the goal is to make the space feel lived-in and loved, not like a showroom.

Styling your coffee table books is a simple, practical way to add character and warmth to your home. It’s a reflection of who you are and what you love. So go ahead, find those beautiful books and start telling your design story, one stack at a time.
