How to DIY your curtains or blinds

This week my Brunswick extension client wanted to reduce the quote for their window treatments. My window treatment supplier submitted two quotes ranging between $20,000-$30,000. This is a normal price to fit an entire house with window treatments. However, my client wanted to review their options. They are considering DIY. So here are my top tips for when to DIY your curtains or blinds.

The technical considerations of window treatments

I don’t usually recommend people DIY window treatment unless for very straightforward windows.

I sort of DIYed linen sheers for my own apartment, now Airbnb. In that I chose the fabric. I measured the height and the width. I checked in with a friend who is more crafty than I am. I needed a second opinion on how many pieces I should get.

I chose the rail. I made sure the fabric curtains fit the rail based on the heading style. But I asked my builder to install the rail.

I think this is straightforward. I still was unsure because one side had restricted access due to the air conditioner. So I had to make sure the rail was suitable and didn’t hit the air con.

Overall it was good and the curtains work well, see below.

But for for complicated spaces, for example walls with windows, doors, corners and so on I don’t recommend DIY.

Things you need to consider include stack back, level floor, walls and ceilings. Hanging mechanism, opening style, rods, drawback string and so on. Vents in ceilings that are close to the windows. So many technical considerations that only an expert can guide on.

This was true for my Brunswick extension project. They wanted to DIY the open plan living area. However, due to various sticking points, I suggested they DIY the bedrooms because they’re more straightforward.

What’s a straightforward window to DIY

You can buy ready made, off the shelf curtains and blinds. I only recommend this for straightforward windows. Custom window treatments are often a better choice for unique or challenging windows and walls.

Straightforward windows are centred. This means there is the same amount of wall on either side. The wall, floor and ceilings are straight.

You have a window frame or enough wall space above your window for a rail. There are no obstructions in the ceiling such as vents. No obstructions either side of the window either.

To successfully DIY your curtains and blinds you need to start with an uncomplicated window. It’s also advisable to keep the window treatment straight forward too.

I think DIYing window treatments works well in certain properties such as, investment properties. Your window treatments should last at least twenty years. Therefore, I recommend getting quality fabric and an expert to measure, fit, and install them in your forever home.

Often I use the analogy that window treatments are like precious jewels. For example, you wouldn’t wear fake pearls with a Chanel dress. If you’re working with an interior designer, budget for good quality window treatments. These should complement the high quality furniture and furnishings.

When do DIY your curtains and blinds depends on your confidence, the straightforwardness of the window and your budget. For my styling checklist to a perfect room click here.
