How to create a functional apartment furniture plan

Buying a piece of furniture or a furniture package is a major investment. We understand the pressure of buying the right investiment piece the first time. Nobody wants to make an expensive furniture mistake. The key to avoid expensive apartment furniture mistakes is an apartment furniture plan. Here are my tips on create a functional apartment furniture plan.

When your apartment has a lot of glass walls

Floor-to-ceiling windows are a dream for views but a nightmare for furniture placement. When you have no “real” walls, your furniture must become the architecture.

  • The Strategy: Use low-profile silhouettes. Avoid high-backed sofas that chop up the view. Instead, opt for “floating” furniture arrangements.
  • The Pro Move: Position your seating area in the center of the room, using a large area rug to anchor the space. This creates a “room within a room” without needing a single solid wall to lean against.

If your apartment living space is narrow

Many premium apartments feature long, narrow open-plan living areas. The mistake most buyers make is pushing all the furniture against the longest wall, which only emphasizes the “hallway” feel.

  • The Strategy: Break the room into zones. Use a console table or the back of a sofa to create a visual boundary between the lounge and the dining area.
  • The Pro Move: Incorporate circular or organic shapes. Like a curved line armchair chair which breaks the harsh linear lines of a narrow room, making the flow feel more natural and less restricted.

When your apartment’s power points are in the wrong position

It’s a classic frustration: the floor plan puts the TV connection on one wall, but the only logical place for the sofa is nowhere near a socket for your lamps.

  • The Strategy: Plan your lighting and tech before you settle on the furniture package. Consider alternatives such as a projector.
  • The Pro Move: You might need to compromise on where or how you watch TV.

Measure Twice, Move Once

In an apartment, every centimeter counts. “Scale” is the difference between a home that feels curated and one that feels cluttered.

ElementThe Golden Rule
WalkwaysMaintain at least 90cm of clearance for primary traffic paths.
Rug SizeAll furniture legs (or at least the front two) should sit on the rug.
Negative SpaceLeave at least 30cm between large pieces to let the room “breathe.”
