How to get your apartment winter ready

I had the heater on for the first time this year and thought winter is just around the corner. But how do you get your house or apartment ready for winter. After weeks of summer weather with open windows, fans and iced tea, now it’s time to get winter ready. Here are my tips on how to get your apartment winter ready

Décor switches in material

If linen and cotton is the material of choice for summer then wool is the material of choice for winter. One way to get your apartment is to simply switch your décor. Décor such as cushions and throws.

Swap your linen or cotton throw for a heavier wool blanket. Wool is a flexible material and works for a range of styles.

Ensure your throw is in line with your existing interior design strategy. A reminder that an interior design strategy is defining your interior style and colour scheme.

For example if your style is Mid-Century Modern add a wool throw in a geometric pattern to get your apartment winter ready through a simple décor switch.

If you’re unsure about pattern, then get a wool throw in a colour from your colour scheme that is a good contrast to your sofa and cushions.

Swapping out your linen and cotton cushions to a heavier material is a good idea to get your apartment winter ready. Think corduroy and velvet. Velvet is not just a material for Luxe style but is flexible enough to work in other styles such as Scandinavian.

Lighting your apartment for winter

Winter means we have less natural light. Most of us wake up in the dark and come home in the dark. So your apartment might benefit from more artificial light in the winter time.

Most apartments heavily rely on spot or down lighting. This light is great for undertaking tasks such as cooking but not great for creating a warm and cosy atmosphere during the winter.

You’ll want a combination of floor lamps and table lamps depending on your space, furniture layout and functional requirements.

Candles are also great to use in winter. Both to create a cosy vibe through ambient light but also to literally create localised warmth. Candles with warming scents are also ideal, such as cinnamon or lavender.

Winter interiors love deeper colours. Look at your colour scheme and see if you can find darker colours in the same palette.

Think chocolate instead of beige. Or charcoal instead of grey. Red instead of pink. Deeper colours are key to creating a warm apartment aesthetic this winter.

With a few tweaks you can get your apartment winter ready by focusing on warmer, heavier fabrics. More ambient lighting such as candles and floor or table lamps and incorporating deeper colours.

It might be worth double checking your heating is working, get a heat pack and ensure you deal with draughts from the windows. Get your uggs out, favourite cardigan and snuggle up to survive winter in your apartment with style
