Creating a New Kitchen Layout

Creating a New Kitchen Layout

In a previous post I mentioned how there is a lot of intuitive problem solving when it comes to reviewing a floor plan. Especially, when you need to respond to a client’s brief for a new kitchen design.

This intuition played an important role in a spatial configuration discussion I had with clients in Northcote, Victoria.

Existing Kitchen Features to Keep

This week I presented a proposed plan for their kitchen layout.  The clients expressed the key problems but didn’t consider changing the layout.  However, there were a few key aspects to this space that led me to suggest a complete layout change.

One of the key aspects included a feature fire place.  The property is a period home and has been renovated and extended.

The fire place that would have once been in the living room was now in the kitchen and it houses the stove and oven. The open chimney is the exhaust.  However, the light is this area is poor.

The other key aspect to my suggested layout change was the existing sky light and the shape and line of the space. It is a long and rectangular space.

And finally the space had a small kitchen counter, only suitable for two people that cut into the space and interrupted the flow of the long rectangular shape.

Presenting a Proposed Plan

In the proposed plan I presented to the client I made three key changes that they loved.  I moved the stove to the opposite side of the kitchen under the sky light and turned the fireplace into an appliance counter.

I extended the cabinetry beyond the nib wall into some negative space that had no real functionality. And opposite to that extended the counter, to follow the line of the kitchen to ensure each member of the family could sit and eat.

My clients admitted they never thought of moving the oven and extending the line of the kitchen.  For me this typifies the value of working with an interior designer.

An interior designer’s expertise and ideas are priceless and add amazing value to a space, functionality and a client’s enjoyment and usage of a space.

So, I was thrilled with my client’s feedback on the kitchen design I suggested. They’re excited about the next step and so am I.  This kitchen transformation will be absolutely stunning.
