Based on my experience and my client’s lived experience, the dining zone, specifically the dining table could be labelled the second hub of the home. As the kitchen is known as the first hub of the home, it makes sense the dining table come a close second. So how do you choose the perfect dining table for your apartment.
Functionality first
First and foremost, you need to reflect on what you use your dining table for. I would guess like most people your dining table has be a multi-functional piece.
My guess is you use your dining table to dump stuff. To eat meals, if not all the time, sometimes. You might use your dining table to work from. You could also use your dining table to manage laundry. I do.
When not in use per se, you might like to have décor on your dining table. Therefore, your dining table might be used as decorative feature in your apartment open plan living space.
Everyone is different, you could also use your dining table for hobbies such as puzzles and sewing. And of course you might like to host dinner parties. A dining table’s uses are endless and personal. So have a think about the real functional needs of your own dining table.
Once you know what you need your dining table to do, you can start thinking about size based on the volume of space you have.
The size of your dining table in your apartment is closely linked to other pieces in the open plan area. So best consider a furniture plan that works with the needs of your dining table.

Size, shape, style and budget
First things first, measure your space. Develop a floor plan. Make sure you have enough room to move around the key pieces of furniture. With this information and with knowing the functional needs of your dining table you can start researching pieces.
Researching pieces could start with style, budget, size, shape, materials. But let’s start with budget. How much can you spend on a dining table?
Next is style. Once you know your budget, let’s say $1,000, you can start researching dining tables at this price in your style.
The style of your dining table will impact shape, whether it’s round, oval, square or rectangular. Whatever your style is, aim for an extendable dining table or a dining table with a drop leaf.
In an apartment environment, flexibility is key and given how multi-functional your dining table needs to be, having extra surface area will come in handy.
The dining tables in my furniture sets are aimed for apartment living. Some are extendable, which means I have made it super easy for you to choose the perfect dining table for your apartment.
