How to buy furniture for your apartment

apartment furniture

Buying furniture for an apartment is different to buying furniture for a house. Primarily because there is less volume of space. I’ve seen so many apartments overfilled with furniture. This compromises functionality. So here’s how to buy furniture for your apartment.

What are your functional requirements?

From my experience everyone has different interior design needs and preferences. For example, this could be the difference between a normal desk or a stand up desk in a home office.

Another example is the difference between having a dining table for two versus a dining table for four.

If you’re single or even if you live with a partner, do you really need a dining table for four? Often people want furniture to cover their bases for possible future scenarios.

My preference is to design a space and develop a furniture plan for how the space is used most of the time.

Key thing is to apply the less is more approach. And buy furniture for your apartment that you need. That fits in the space and isn’t overly big.

Many of my clients buy oversized furniture. They must watch their step as they navigate around large pieces. This is to avoid bumping into things.

Measure your space for furniture and movement

Once you decide what your functional requirements are, the next step is to measure your space. Measure your space with negative and positive space in mind.

Positive space is the space occupied by a furniture piece. It communicates the functionality of a room. It is usually a focal piece.

The negative space, which is equally important, is the empty area around furniture that allows access to each piece. Allowing an unobstructed flow of movement.

Develop an interior design strategy

I think buying furniture for your apartment successfully requires developing an interior design strategy.

An interior design strategy involves knowing your interior style goal. You should also define your colour scheme and understand how to apply colour.

For example, if you know you like Hampton’s interior style, the sofa will be generously proportioned. But if you like Mid-Century Modern interior style, the sofa will be slim lined.

Similarly, knowing your colour scheme will help. For example, if your colour scheme is black, white and grey, your sofa will most likely be black or grey. If you like Mid-Century Modern, this choice complements your style.

If you like Hampton’s interior style and your colour scheme is blue, white and red. Your sofa will most likely be white or blue.

With a little bit of planning buying furniture for your apartment doesn’t have to be confusing or overwhelming. And you certainly don’t have to make expensive furniture mistakes. I have a checklist you can refer to also.
