When it comes to appliances for my own home I like to keep things simple. But I know some clients like highly sophisticated functionality or simply the latest technology. I had to a select a rangehood for my own kitchen recently. So here’s an overview of the besth rangehood to select for your kitchen renovation.
Types of rangehoods
Did you know that there are many types of rangehoods? For example, there are canopy rangehoods, undermount rangehoods, slide out rangehoods, and fixed rangehoods. With the most common sizes being 600mm or 900mm.
So how do you know which is the best rangehood to select for your kitchen renovation? There are many considerations but to start narrowing the selection first you need to decide or learn if your rangehood can be externally fluted or it needs to be recirculating.
Mostly I’ve worked with recirculating rangehoods as for one reason or another an externally fluted exhaust is not an option.
For me I had to select between a fixed or slide out rangehood. Here’s how I made my choice.
Slide out rangehood pros and cons
My mum has a slide out rangehood which I don’t like. I don’t like that the slide out mechanism controls the strength of the fan. I don’t like that the wall cabinets that conceal the rangehood need to be open for the air to escape. And I don’t like that the surrounding cabinets get yellow over time.
You might have a different experience with slide out rangehoods but because of mine I decided to look at other options. However, the one pro I can think of is the rangehood is concealed by cabinetry. So it has a seamless finish.
The rangehood I was interested is a fixed rangehood.
Fixed rangehood pros and cons
I like the fixed rangehood for two main reasons. As the buttons to control the fan where on the front I felt like I could manage the strength of the fan easier than a slide out rangehood.
I also liked that the vent was on the top of the unit not concealed by the cabinetry. The sales assistant told me because of this the kitchen would smell.
But my experience is that foods smells are good smells. They are what help to make a house a home. And there are other ways to manage the smell such as scented candles.
So what was important to me was to have the external buttons to control the fan rather than the slide out and the vent to be external to the cabinetry to avoid yellowing.
Size & price of your rangehood
Of course size and price also factor into your decision making process. Also other factors such as noise levels, light and so on.
Mostly I advise my clients to undertake thorough research when selecting appliances. A good appliance should come with a good warranty and last you a long time.
So when it comes to choosing which rangehood to select for your kitchen renovation start with what you know and what you like and don’t like about your existing rangehood. That way you start your search with a wish list for the best rangehood to select for your kitchen renovation.
