Two easy ways to add more counter space to your apartment kitchen

Currently I’m seeking respondents to a questionnaire about apartment living. Getting responses, mostly via my suburb’s neighbourhood FB page. One of the key challenges of living in an apartment, according to the survey, is limited kitchen counter space. Here’s how to add more counter space to your apartment kitchen.

Increase the size of existing apartment kitchen counter

I’ve done this in the past with clients for various reasons. I increased the size of the existing kitchen countertop. I did this by either adding depth or a drop leaf option.

Either of these two options might be a suitable solution to your apartment kitchen counter space issues.

With the first idea of increasing the depth of the kitchen counter you can essentially do this on one side of your apartment kitchen counter.

This works in galley style kitchens and if you have a kitchen counter that is an island. In most of the apartments I’ve seen the kitchen design layouts as a galley, single wall or wall with island. There are some U shaped kitchens I’ve seen as well in apartments.

In some apartment developments the kitchen counter that is closest to the open plan living area, or adjacent to the dining zone may or may not have enough depth for stools. If it doesn’t you can add depth.

A kitchen counter ranges in depth from 600mm to 900mm. You can 300mm to the counter without the need for support.

The material and surface of the additional piece to your kitchen counter doesn’t have to be the same as your existing countertop surface.

Mostly likely your existing counter surface is some kind of stone but a laminate addition in a wood tone could work well.

Depending on your kitchen layout and volume of space you could also add a drop leaf piece to your existing kitchen counter to add more counter space.

It’s worth discussing both options with an interior designer to ensure you choose the right option. Also to ensure you don’t compromise the flow of movement throughout the open plan area of your apartment or house.

Bar table to add counter space to your apartment kitchen

Another easy and low-cost solution to adding kitchen counter space to your apartment is by considering a bar table instead of a traditional dining table.

I did this for an apartment client in Bundoora. I chose a beautiful bar table with velvet stools as dining chairs.

This option was an ideal solution of my client. A multifunctional solution where the bar table acts as extra kitchen counter space for food preparation.

It also performs as a dining table with the additional of beautiful bar stools to complement this functional requirement. As well as a work space.

So if you’re struggling with limited counter space, maybe these two ideas can add more counter space to your apartment kitchen. If you’re really stuck it wouldn’t hurt to talk to an interior designer.
